London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • Occupying four large Victorian mansions, this is one of the best of the many South Kensington town-house hotels. Overlooking a quiet square (some rooms have balconies), this is a relaxed and friendly place to stay.

  • Located in a quiet, upmarket part of town, this privately run hotel has 43 bedrooms and two executive suites, with 24-hour service, coffee- and tea-making facilities in the rooms and a bar. It has no restaurant but there is a good Greek taverna just a few yards away.

  • This is a fabulous place to sit and dine, especially at lunchtime when the inexpensive menu of mainly French food seems a treat among the gold, wood and marble furnishings.

  • Cybercandy

A vast range of scrumptious sweets imported from all over the world fill the shelves in this amazing shop. Try some Chocolate Covered Giant Ants, Sour Scream Candy Foam or a Gobstopper Lollipop! More traditional treats like Sherbet Fountains and Kola Kubes can also be found, ensuring that this store has something to tempt everyone, no matter how sweet your tooth!

  • Rent bikes from On Your Bike in London Bridge (020 7378 6669) and The London Bicycle Tour Company in Gabriel’s Wharf (020 7928 6838).

  • A permanent exhibition of 500 works by the great Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí (1904–89).

  • All kinds of travel books, including fiction, are arranged along oak galleries in this atmospheric Edwardian travel bookshop.

  • Davenports Magic

This family run magic shop is one of the oldest and most established in Britain. Selling hundreds of different magic tricks, they cater for all ages and abilities. The staff even do demonstrations and could probably teach even the smartest wizard a trick or two!

  • A middle-of-the-road department store that sells everything from tools to toys.

  • A Georgian house in the East End of London, with each room beautifully made up to recreate a different century.
