A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • Clubbers flock here until 6am for techno and house.

  • Gabriel’s Wharf

    Shops in riverside Gabriel’s Wharf display hand-painted glassware, fashion, interiors, jewellery and ceramics.

  • Named after the English painter Thomas Gainsborough, this hotel aims to recreate the feel of an English country home. It is conveniently located for the museums and Knightsbridge shops.

  • Geffrye Museum

    Devoted to the evolution of family life and interior design, this fascinating museum has a series of rooms decorated in distinct period style. Originally a 1715 almshouse, the building has been transformed and you can wander through an oak-panelled 17th-century drawing room, a 1930s flat or a contemporary loft apartment. Stroll through a series of period gardens between April and October.

  • Somewhere between sci-fi and industrial chic, this youth-orientated hostel provides budget solutions for impecunious travellers. 24-hour internet facilities.

  • Chaucer (1343–1400) was a diplomat and son of a London vintner. HisCanterbury Tales is a classic piece of English literature, and follows a group of pilgrims travelling from Southwark to Canterbury. In 17,000 lines the characters tell their rollicking tales.

  • The great German-born composer first visited London in 1710 and settled here permanently in 1712.

  • Instituted in 1940 under George VI, this medal is awarded for acts of heroism by civilians.

  • London’s only surviving galleried coaching inn is a maze of plain, wood-panelled rooms and upstairs bars. Bar meals are served at lunchtime –àla carte menu in the evenings. Courtyard tables are pleasant in summer.

  • George Inn

    Built in 1676, this is the only galleried coaching inn left in London, and was taken over by the National Trust in 1937. You can enjoy the well-kept beers in its myriad old rooms, with lattice windows and wooden beams, or in the large courtyard.
