London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • Liberty

This handsome, half-timbered building dates from 1925 and its fine wood-floored and panelled interior is as much a part of the shopping experience as the exclusive goods it contains. Long associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, it employed artists such as William Morris to design its fabrics. Great for men’s and women’s fashions and original gifts.

  • Liberty

One of London’s most appealing department stores, Liberty sells cutting-edge contemporary design in clothing, jewellery and household items. Opened in 1875, to specialise in goods and silks from the Empire, the shop remains famous for its “Liberty Print” fabric.

  • Opposite the Young Vic theatre, this is one of a chain of modern fish restaurants. If you can’t decide on a main course, go for variety with two starters.

  • Llewellyn Alexander

This art gallery has changing, quality exhibitions, notably in the summer.

  • See music and comedy at this informal venue, with wooden floors and cosy tables arranged over several levels, overlooking Regent’s Canal.

  • See sharks and rays swim among recreated reef and ocean environments at one of Europe’s largest aquariums.

  • London Aquarium

Seven watery environments are spread across two floors in this engaging display. They range from freshwater ponds to coral reefs, mangrove swamps to deep mysterious oceans. Sit and watch the sharks and piranhas being fed, or pick up a crab or starfish in the hands-on tidal- pool exhibit.

  • Every kind of souvenir commemorating Britain’s most famous band is on sale here. The Elvis Presley shop is next door.

  • London Brass Rubbing Centre

Located in St Martin-in-the-Fields, the London Brass Rubbing Centre provides the opportunity for visitors to try brass rubbings on a selection of replica brasses, including medieval knights, ladies, saints, and other historical and mythological figures. The centre provides all the specialist papers and metallic waxes that you need to create a superb artwork for a gift for someone special or as a unique memory of your visit to St Martin's.

  • Just over the river from the City, this handsome, modern, independently owned hotel is equipped for business guests. The restaurant serves a mixture of Malaysian, Indian and Chinese cuisines.
