London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • Some of the best drag acts in town.

  • Madame Tussaud’s

One of London’s most popular attractions, this is where you can see everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Queen. A Spirit of London ride takes you on a whistle-stop tour of the city’s history. The famous Chamber of Horrors puts you face-to-face with London’s most infamous criminals and has the very guillotine that beheaded Queen Marie Antoinette in the French Revolution. The next-door Planetarium has a 30-minute star show and two interactive exhibits unravelling the mysteries of space. Get there early to avoid waiting in long lines.

  • Madame Tussaud’s

Madame Tussaud’s museum of waxwork models of the famous has been one of London’s major attractions for a century. To avoid a long wait, arrive early in the day or book ahead by phone or web to get a timed ticket. Next door, the Planetarium has a 30-minute show about the night sky. You can buy a combined ticket for both.

  • Maggs Bros. Rare Books

This shop is one of the oldest and largest dealers of antiquarian and rare books in the world. It also happens to be located in what is reputedly the most haunted house in London. Huge mahogany bookcases stacked high with leather-bound books fill the shop. Everything from letters to manuscripts written by long forgotten scientists, artists and explorers can be found here. The terrifying tales of ghosts have existed since Victorian times and include reports of flickering lights, disembodied screams and strange deaths. If you dare to enter, this shop is sure to have whatever mysterious and magical book you might need.

  • The menu offers an exciting range of Cantonese dishes.

  • The “father” of India’s independence movement (1869–1948) studied law in the Inner Temple in 1889.

  • This little corner of Paris in the heart of Soho attracts a faithful clientele, who love its delicious coffee and heavenly cakes.

  • By Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, this fun musical is a romantic comedy based around 22 Abba hits, and set on an island.

  • A Burmese café where the food is a pleasing mix of Chinese, Indian and Thai. Mandalay is friendly, inexpensive and non-smoking.

  • Mango Room

Distinctive Caribbean food is served in this bright restaurant. Try the “Camden curried goat”.
