A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts.   • Apsley House

    The home of the Duke of Wellington, Apsley House is still partly occupied by the family. Designed by Robert Adam in the 1770s, the mansion is given over to paintings, and memorabilia of the great military leader. Paintings include several fine works by Diego Velázquez, includingThe Waterseller of Seville . Antonio Canova’s nude statue of Napoleon has special poignancy.

  • The Aquarium Bar on Old Street is horrible; it mostly serves as a place for the yellow shortsleeved beshirted chavs awaiting their entrance into the temple of vomitessness that is the Aquarium nightclub to drink the requisite number of pints that they can consider themselves attractive enough to pull. HOWEVER, it has a large, plain, very high up roof terrace, which is a sun trap all afternoon and surprisingly chilled. It's a very well kept secret.

  • This recently refurbished Georgian town house is now a pleasant small hotel. It has a garden at the back and all rooms areensuite .

  • This friendly family-run hotel is conveniently located a short walking distance from the British Museum, Oxford Street and the West End. 24- hour internet facilities and a walled summer rose garden.

  • Creative café, popular with children, where you can decorate your own ceramic, glass, fabric or wooden items. They provide all the equipment as well as coffee, tea and snacks.

  • A stylish pizza and pasta restaurant behind Oxford Street.

  • The British royal family have bought their jewels here for more than a century. Other gift items to be found here include pens and silver picture frames.

  • This theatre is now a famous rock venue, playing host to a variety of bands. Its rough-and-ready ambiance attracts a crowd of devoted fans.

  • Trendy cocktail bar and restaurant serving modern European cuisine. Open until 3am Mon–Sat.

  • This light, airy restaurant serves such modern European dishes as risotto and Thai noodles. There is also a tempting selection of deserts. A good place to spot political faces.
