A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.
-
A good ol' regular fish and chip shop. With plenty of fish choices on the menu (e.g. Cod, Huss, Haddock, Plaice, Skate), you'll be sure to find something that catches your fancy. Three complimentary cooked prawns and bread rolls are plonked at your table the moment you sit down, this place proves to be cheap and cheerful. To get there, head south from Waterloo Station, the restaurant is just past the Old Vic Theatre.
-
Fantastic cocktail bar. Little pricey but well worth it. All fresh ingredients, the bar staff is friendly and passionate about mixing drinks, and it is a needed escape from the craziness of Oxford street.
-
The theme song of music-hall duo, Chesney and Allen, it became a patriotic comfort in 1940s’ wartime London.
-
A Carnaby Street classic, fans may still buy clothes cut from original 1960s patterns here.
-
Opened in 2000, and just a stone’s throw from Tate Modern, this seven-storey hotel has pay TV and video-games in every room.
-
An arts and crafts village on the River Wandle, with an old watermill, pub, restaurant, shops and weekend craft market. Arts festival in the summer
-
This Italian restaurant offers authentic pasta dishes, as well as such oddities as the surprisingly appetizing parmesan cheese ice cream. Excellent house wines.
-
Contemporary and stylish, this was one of the first of the classy modern hotels in London, with black-clad staff, cool interiors and minimalist Oriental-style bedrooms. Go celebrity-spotting in the Met Bar or in Nobu, its fashionable Japanese restaurant.
-
Great little chilled-out local bar featuring a massive selection of microbrewed beers from around the world, including several on tap.
-
Hungry? Vegetarian? This is an amazing place for vegetarians who actually want more than salad (who said vegetarians want the same in every resturant they go to?). There's a good selection of tasty homemade food here not your just out of teh freezer stuff. The range includes burritos, tagines, bangers-and-mash, teriyaki stir-fries, and Porcini-mushroom-and-ale pies. Look out for the daily special ours was a leek, fennel and sweet potato burger, served with fruit relish and homemade chunky chips. The only downside is the place is always heaving and you can't book. But a fantastci place to adventure too if you haven't been already! Come early!
