London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • One Aldwych

In a former 1908 bank building, this is a relaxing designer hotel with art-filled lobby and corridors, two good restaurants and an 18-m (60-ft) pool with underwater music.

  • ...say the bells of St Clement’s ”. This children’s song rhymes City churches, and is sung as part of a game.

  • A distinctive Moroccan wine list complements the hearty tagines and couscous, including vegetarian versions, offered here.

  • This is a lovely restaurant, serving French-inspired cooking.

  • Sir Terence Conran is London’s most prominent restaurateur. This intimate restaurant is at the peak of perfection and prices. The short menu changes regularly, and is Modern European with a French bias – including the best fish, beef and game.

  • A popular, atmospheric, mid-priced Italian restaurant.

  • Oscar Wilde

Dublin-born Wilde (1854–1900) dazzled London audiences with his plays, and society with his wit. He fell from grace when he was convicted of homosexual activity. His plays, such asLady Windermere’s Fan (1892) andThe Importance of Being Earnest (1895) are frequently revived.

  • Osterley Park

A magnificent neo-classical house with fine Adam interiors, landscape park and 18th-century gardens. In 1761 the founders of Child's Bank commissioned Robert Adam to transform a Tudor mansion into an elegant neo-classical villa. Today the spectacular interiors contain one of Britain's most complete examples of Adam's work.

  • Ottolenghi

Ottolenghi offers a unique culinary experience: original food and pastries, all made daily on site and displayed generously within a beautifully designed setting.

  • The two universities’ annual rowing race covers some 6.5 km (4 miles) on the Thames.
