  • Between Waterloo Station and the London Eye, this is one of a chain of French restaurants whose simple steak and fries are unbeatable.

  • Chez Gerard

This branch of a popular chain of French restaurants has a glass roof and spectacular setting overlooking Covent Garden market. Robust, unfussy French food at its best. The café is open 11am–5pm.

  • Churchill Arms

Filled with intriguing bric-à-brac and Churchill memorabilia, this is a large, friendly Victorian pub. Inexpensive Thai food is served in the conservatory at lunchtime and for dinner until 9:30pm.

  • The menu consists of whatever chef Sally Clarke decides to cook for the evening meal. Whatever it is will be excellent.

  • Clarke’s

A steady favourite since it opened in 1984, the food here is wonderfully fresh, and basically Mediterranean, with roast and baked dishes to the fore. Set menus mean you have to go with the patronne’s taste, but she will take you to places you have not been before. The wine list favours California.

    Clarke’s
  • Top-notch cuisine from southwest France. Pick three or four “taster” dishes, such as squid or cassoulet, from four themed sections, or there is a five-course gourmet “tasting” menu, including wines.

  • Inspired Gallic cooking means you need to make a reservation weeks in advance. The original idea here is that there are no starter or main courses. Dishes are categorised under half a dozen themed headings, and you put together three of four to make a meal. Each one is a rare combination.

  • Fine City sights from this rooftop garden bar and French restaurant

  • A range of champagnes and wines are available at this basement bar near Leicester Square. Open until midnight, Monday to Saturday.

  • This is a fabulous place to sit and dine, especially at lunchtime when the inexpensive menu of mainly French food seems a treat among the gold, wood and marble furnishings.
