  • This cavernous former fire station is a popular bar and restaurant. Close to Waterloo Station.

  • The pub that gave its name to the area (Fitzrovia) has a large central bar that attracts a lively after-work crowd. Good Samuel Smith beer is reasonably priced.

  • In the basement of St John’s, Smith Square, this is a good spot for a lunchtime snack.

  • London’s only surviving galleried coaching inn is a maze of plain, wood-panelled rooms and upstairs bars. Bar meals are served at lunchtime –àla carte menu in the evenings. Courtyard tables are pleasant in summer.
