  • As much a literary event as a hotel, Hazlitt’s is located in the former townhouse of essayist William Hazlitt (1778–1830). The hotel’s literary feel is enhanced by its library of books signed by the many authors that have stayed here.

  • A modern hotel with standard facilities, this is the closest hotel to Stansted Airport. Ideal for early flights, it is a short bus journey to the terminal.

  • One of a chain of ten, value-for-money London hotels, the London City hotel is not actually in the City, but backs onto newly fashionable Hoxton Square, an area known more for art than for business.

  • Located between Camden and Hampstead, this modern 140-bedroom hotel has all the regular facilities of a chain hotel, including a bar and the Junction Restaurant. It offers very good rates at weekends.

  • This agency specialises in inexpensive accommodation in homes in London and elsewhere in the UK. A two-night minimum stay is preferred.

  • This inexpensive French chain’s Docklands hotel is near the river on the east side of Canary Wharf, just off the busy main streets. Rooms are perfectly adequate, and a substantial buffet breakfast is served.

  • In university holidays, some student rooms are available at reasonable rates. This house, though, has space all year. Dormitories, single and twin rooms are available at a range of prices. There is a bar, a gym, a restaurant and internet café.

  • This beautiful Neo-Georgian building was designed by Edwin Lutyens for the YWCA in 1929. The Queen Mary Hall is now a conference centre and the former chapel provides a quiet, discreet meeting room. The suites and rooms have been designed for a mainly business clientele, with modems, voice-mail and work desks.

  • Between Paddington station and Hyde Park, Sussex Gardens is a quiet, pleasant street lined with inexpensive hotels. Lancaster Court is just a few minutes walk from Hyde Park.

  • Located in a quiet side street near Oxford Circus, this enticing hotel, with its attractive facade, is as friendly inside as its exterior promises. Rooms are comfortably furnished and there is a good restaurant serving mainly French food.
