  • Glass, steel and bamboo feature in these high-quality Japanese-style serviced apartments, with on-call chefs to cook for you, Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream in the fridge and full Internet facilities.

  • One Aldwych

In a former 1908 bank building, this is a relaxing designer hotel with art-filled lobby and corridors, two good restaurants and an 18-m (60-ft) pool with underwater music.

  • Located in a quiet area of west London north of Kensington Gardens, this Best Western hotel has 195 comfortable, spacious rooms, an inexpensive restaurant for residents and a pleasant lounge bar.

  • Full of character, full of junk, with each room individually and tastefully cluttered, this is the kind of hotel you would hope to find near London’s great antiques market. Food in the restaurant is prepared by the nearby Julie’s wine bar.

  • With only 56 rooms and a pleasant garden, this is an alternative to the large Heathrow airport hotels. A courtesy bus leaves for the airport every hour from 7am–10pm and takes around 10 minutes.

  • This large, rambling hotel near Piccadilly Circus is good value for its central position. Because it is a popular hotel for London breaks, weekend rates are more expensive. The hotel has no restaurant but there is a large Irish theme bar, O’Callaghan’s.

  • Richmond Hill Hotel

Dating from 1726, this Georgian mansion at the top of Richmond Hill, close to Richmond Park, has a modern wing. A few select rooms, which are not necessarily more expensive, have river views. Guests have use of such facilities as a pool, sauna and a beauty salon.

  • Ritz

One of London’s most glamorous hotels, the Ritz is decorated in cream and pink, with gold and silk trimmings, chandeliers and Louis XVI furniture. Afternoon tea in the Palm Court is popular and the restaurant has a garden terrace.

  • Based in an attractive Victorian building, this hotel has a great position near the River Thames and is not far from Richmond Park or the shops of Richmond. Some of the rooms overlook the river and one has French windows onto the hotel garden.

  • Royal Garden Hotel

This hotel squeezes into the mid-price category for its excellent weekend rate. It is a pleasantly airy modern hotel next to Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace and close to the shops of Kensington High Street. Facilities include a health centre, spa and gym, 24-hour business centre and two restaurants.
