  • This comprehensive museum located near the Barbican Centre provides a detailed account of London life from prehistoric times to the present day. It is particularly strong on Roman Londinium, but also has a model re-creating the Great Fire of 1666 and a reconstruction of a Victorian street including several original shopfronts.

The Museum of London is a wonderful museum with a wealth of original historic artifacts from the 2000 years of London's existence and everyone should visit it at some point. If you are not someone who has done a lot of reading or is somewhat familiar with London's varied past, then I think it should be one of your first stops on a visit to London. The exhibits give context to much of what you will see as your explore this city. The architecture, the river, the bridges, the wars, the plague and the Great Fire- they have all played their role and you'll understand them better if you spend an hour or two here first!
