London

A city of infinite colour and variety, London is both richly historic, tracing its roots back over 2000 years, and unceasingly modern, at the forefront of fashion, music and the arts. There is a fantastic amount to interest and entertain the visitor here: a selection of the best of the best is explored here.

  • Nunhead Cemetery

It's one of the great Victorian Cemeteries, but not many people know about it. It's creepy and great.

  • A fantasic modern Indian Restaurant situated in Pimlico, near Victoria. Tasty food in a very pleasantly designed interior, with a roomy garden space too.

  • Ocklynge Manor

Bed and breakfast in Eastbourne. Very good facilities, home cooking (including cakes and jams) and nothing is forgotten about.

  • We visited the “Old Bull and Bush” on a cold and drizzly February lunchtime. We had children with us and so we headed for the large-and airy no-smoking room on the side of the pub. There were a couple of other large family parties having lunch there, and we found a table in one of the large window alcoves. We could watch the drizzle coming down outside, and I could also watch the televised rugby out of the corner of my eye.

We ordered food from the main bar (American Express accepted) and our burgers and sandwiches arrived just as hungry impatience was setting in. My burger (GBP7.00) was unexceptional, but it did come in a great big fresh rustic bun and the fried potatoes were crunchy. Tina enjoyed her steak sandwich (GBP4.50), and the “bangers on mash” on special looked good.

  • Osterley Park

A magnificent neo-classical house with fine Adam interiors, landscape park and 18th-century gardens. In 1761 the founders of Child's Bank commissioned Robert Adam to transform a Tudor mansion into an elegant neo-classical villa. Today the spectacular interiors contain one of Britain's most complete examples of Adam's work.

  • Ottolenghi

Ottolenghi offers a unique culinary experience: original food and pastries, all made daily on site and displayed generously within a beautifully designed setting.

  • As a Hilton Hotel, rooms & amenitites are quite nice, though expensive. This hotel is worth every cent for location alone. It is actually connected to the Paddington Station, which is fantastic. After arriving at Heathrow, you can simply take the Heathrow Express right to the hotel; no wandering about the streets searching for the hotel-- it has an entrance in the station. Very convenient. Paddington is also a great place to stay because it has numerous tube lines-- so it is really easy to get around.
The Hilton is lovely and there are lots of amenities in the neighborhoods. This hotel has large, spacious marbled-tiled bathrooms. The hotel has a surprisingly modern interior-- it was recently remodeled and everything is spacious and streamlined. Nicely, the mini-fridge has room to add a few munchies from the Marks & Spencers food shop downstairs.

  • Paolina Cafe

At first glance Paolina Cafe is not the sort of place you'd want to eat in. With its faded, wind-beaten canopy and a location on the dreary King's Cross Road, even a second glance doesn't exactly look promising.

But looks are often deceptive. Pushing inside, you pass a couple of plastic, greasy spoon booths, a cramped kitchen area and the smiling family who run the place. Sitting down in a tiny, seventies-style wood panelled room (with room for about 20 diners) the food comes along... and it's fabulous!

It's also an unlicensed 'bring your own' place, so you can wash the great range of Thai dishes down with your favourite tipple while saving some money in the process.

There might be real food for less in London. But it would have to be hiding itself even better than Paolina does.

  • The best pie and mash for miles is to be had at The Pie and Mash Shop, 55 Wood Lane, London, E17 3JX.

The staff are really friendly but more importantly the pies are pucker!!

  • Postman's Park

A grest place to relax, Postmans Park is home to palms, a mossy goldfish-stocked fountain, and clipped lawns. It is also home to the interesting Watts Memorial - with plaques inscribed with evocative late 1800s memorials to everyday heroism. It is well worth a visit.
