  • 1. Travel Inn Capital

London’s best inexpensive hotel has a memorable location in County Hall near the river and the British Airways London Eye. Though basic, facilities are more than adequate, with fold-out beds for children in each of the 313 rooms. It is essential to book well in advance.

  • 2. Columbia Hotel

The Columbia has a delightful leafy setting overlooking Kensington Gardens. Originally five mansions, and once used as a US military officers’ club, it has magnificent rooms and is much more opulent than its prices suggest.

  • 3. Fielding Hotel

Ideally situated for Covent Garden, this quaint room-only hotel is a warren of oddly shaped rooms, with showers and basins tucked in corners. Outside there is all of Covent Garden to breakfast in.

  • 4. Morgan Guest House

This stylish budget B&B in a Georgian terrace in fashionable Belgravia has light, modern decor. It is close to Victoria station and all rooms are comfortably furnished, four with private bathrooms.

  • 5. Lancaster Court Hotel

Between Paddington station and Hyde Park, Sussex Gardens is a quiet, pleasant street lined with inexpensive hotels. Lancaster Court is just a few minutes walk from Hyde Park.

  • 6. Craven Gardens Hotel

Located in a quiet, upmarket part of town, this privately run hotel has 43 bedrooms and two executive suites, with 24-hour service, coffee- and tea-making facilities in the rooms and a bar. It has no restaurant but there is a good Greek taverna just a few yards away.

  • 7. Brompton Hotel

Situated just by South Kensington tube station and handy for the museums, this typical west London hotel has comfortable rooms with bathrooms. Reception is on the first floor. On the ground-floor is an American-style bar (not owned by the hotel) run by New Yorker Janet Evans, which serves great cocktails.

  • 8. Morgan Hotel

This cheap and cheerful family-run hotel has been here for 27 years. Several of the rooms overlook the British Museum and all rooms have airconditioning. The cosy breakfast area has framed London memorabilia on the walls.

  • 9. Elizabeth Hotel

This handsome town house overlooks a quiet, private square, which is available for guests’ use. It is close to Victoria station, and has single, double and family rooms.

  • 10. Arran House Hotel
