  • 1. Westminster Arms and Storey’s Wine Bar

    Parliament has its own busy bars and canteens, but you might see a politician in the Big Ben Bar at this nearby pub, or in the basement wine bar next-door.

  • 2. Footstool

    In the basement of St John’s, Smith Square, this is a good spot for a lunchtime snack.

  • 3. Fire Station

    This cavernous former fire station is a popular bar and restaurant. Close to Waterloo Station.

  • 4. Konditor and Cook

    Open from the early morning, Konditor and Cook serves delicious, freshly-baked cakes from its in-house bakery. Worth a visit for its ever popular hot chocolate.

  • 5. The Anchor at Bankside

    Snug, old English pub with tables outside in summer. The dining room upstairs serves traditional English food.

  • 6. Vinopolis Wine Wharf

    The bar of this modern temple to viticulture has a vast wine list plus 20 varieties of champagne served by the glass.

  • 7. Globe Café at Shakespeare’s Globe

    Wonderfully located café on the first floor of this handsomely restored Shakespearian theatre building, with a fine view of St Paul’s.

    A popular, historic market pub. Open for traders and all-night ravers from 6–8:30 am.

    One of the few remaining workmen’s cafés in central London, where friendly waitresses serve hearty “fry-ups” and industrial-strength cups of tea.

    London’s only surviving galleried coaching inn is a maze of plain, wood-panelled rooms and upstairs bars. Bar meals are served at lunchtime –àla carte menu in the evenings. Courtyard tables are pleasant in summer.
