Los Angeles

The myth, the velocity, the edginess in creative and technological fields – this is Los Angeles, where the multicultural future that awaits the rest of the country is already a firm reality. In little more than 200 years, LA has grown from a dusty Spanish outpost into one of the world’s largest and most complex cities offering top venues for everything from archaeology and the arts to food. The birthplace of Mickey Mouse and Hollywood, LA has shaped the imaginations of millions.

  • This unassuming space, hidden in an alley, presents cutting-edge contemporary art by emerging and established artists, such as Catherine Opie, Lari Pittman, and Richard Prince.

  • Managed by Marriott, this art-filled high-rise overlooks Hollywood and Highland. Suites accommodate small meetings. An equipped business center, PC rentals, and secretarial services are also on offer.

  • This retro emporium specializes in reproductions of classic furniture and period hardware such as door knobs, but also has a fun selection of trendy home accessories.

  • Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace

This memorial to the 37th US president (1913–94) includes a museum, gardens, and the restored 1910 farmhouse where he was born. High-tech exhibits focus on Nixon’s achievements, but also include a gallery about Watergate. A recreation of the Lincoln Sitting Room, Nixon’s favorite in the White House, is another highlight.

  • Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel

A grand old-world style resort, this is a destination in itself. Have your breakfast alfresco and lounge by the Olympic-sized pool, followed by a pampering session in the full-service spa. Enjoy high tea in the afternoon, then hit the tennis courts before changing for dinner at the elegant restaurant. A perfect day, indeed!

  • Overlooking the world’s largest custom-built pleasure boat harbor, the Ritz-Carlton offers European elegance and deluxe creature comforts. Indulge in global cuisine at the stylish Jer-ne restaurant.

  • Price tags are steep at the boutiques on this ultra-cool two-block stretch, but you may be browsing next to celebrities such as Cameron Diaz or Jennifer Aniston. Part of the mix are cutting-edge LA designers.

  • Rodeo Dr.

    Outdoor Shopping Area

  • Rodeo Drive

A stroll along this fabled shopping street (see Temptations on Rodeo Drive) is a must. All the big names in haute couture have staked out their turf on Rodeo, including Armani, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, and Versace. For better prices, walk one block east to Beverly Drive.

  • Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive (see Temptations on Rodeo Drive ">) is one of the world’s most famous – and expensive – shopping streets, synonymous with a lifestyle of luxury and fame. Only three blocks long, it is essentially an haute couture runway, with all the major international players represented. You’ll often spot nicely groomed shoppers, though actual star sightings are rare. Rodeo’s southern end is punctuated by the Regent Beverly Wilshire, one of LA’s grandest hotels (see Bastions of Luxury). Architecture fans check out Frank Lloyd Wright’s Anderton Court.
