Los Angeles

The myth, the velocity, the edginess in creative and technological fields – this is Los Angeles, where the multicultural future that awaits the rest of the country is already a firm reality. In little more than 200 years, LA has grown from a dusty Spanish outpost into one of the world’s largest and most complex cities offering top venues for everything from archaeology and the arts to food. The birthplace of Mickey Mouse and Hollywood, LA has shaped the imaginations of millions.

  • Schindler House

The private home and studio of Vienna-born architect Rudolf Schindler (1887–1953) is a modern architectural classic. Completed in 1922, the house’s flat roof, open floor plan, ample use of glass, and rooms opening to a courtyard, greatly influenced California architecture. Today, it houses the MAK Center for Arts and Architecture that hosts a year-round schedule of tours, exhibitions, lectures, and other interesting events.

  • This original Soviet submarine, moored right next to the Queen Mary, saw service from 1973 to 1994. A self-guided tour takes in the engine room, the kitchen, and other cramped quarters.

  • Serenity rules at this exclusive retreat tucked away in the mountains high above Malibu. Unwind with a massage or in your room before a wood-burning fireplace. A range of modern communication devices makes sure that you don’t lose touch with the real world.

  • A Santa Monica budget abode, it is perfect for those who favor location over luxury. Only two blocks from the beach, it is on trendy Main Street with wonderful shopping and dining.

  • Rooms in this Hermosa Beach hotel won’t win the style awards, but with a location right on the beach, you probably won’t spend much time inside. Larger units sleep up to six.

  • Head to this low-key ocean playground just south of the San Gabriel River for a taste of small-town America. Warm waters and small to mid-size waves make it ideal for swimmers and surfers. A 1,865-ft (600-m) pier with a diner anchors Seal Beach.

  • This nonprofit arts center works chiefly with the Latino community. Visit the Galeria Otra Vez.

  • No artist has left behind such a thorough record of his own likeness as Rembrandt (1606–69). The elegant garb, dapper beret, and gold chain in this portrait emphasize his social status as a sought-after artist.

  • Bathed in an ambience of beauty and serenity, this hidden sanctuary was created in 1950 by Paramahansa Yogananda, an Indian-born spiritual leader. Wander over to the shrine to Mahatma Gandhi or the spring-fed lake, meditate inside a recreated 16th-century windmill, or study the Court of Religions that honors all of the world’s major religions.

  • Dating from 1939, this hotel doesn’t quite manage to combine nostalgia with modern amenities. However, its oceanfront Santa Monica location is great and the large rooms have ocean views. Rates include parking, a small breakfast, and tea.
