Los Angeles

The myth, the velocity, the edginess in creative and technological fields – this is Los Angeles, where the multicultural future that awaits the rest of the country is already a firm reality. In little more than 200 years, LA has grown from a dusty Spanish outpost into one of the world’s largest and most complex cities offering top venues for everything from archaeology and the arts to food. The birthplace of Mickey Mouse and Hollywood, LA has shaped the imaginations of millions.

  • In this still life, Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) applies the bright colors and minute detail usually reserved for his depictions of saints and clergy.

  • One of the best bargains in downtown, the Stillwell puts you within walking distance of the Staples Center. It’s in a well restored early 20th-century building and has a popular Indian restaurant and a graceful old-time cocktail lounge.

  • Creativity is king at this “city of stories.” Its shelves bulge with some 5,000 kiddie books, while its walls showcase the work of top illustrators. The store is also known for its family events and storytelling sessions.

  • The best in the business, Boardwalk’s street performers dance, walk barefoot on glass, balance people on their chin, and even juggle chainsaws.

  • This ultra-deluxe West Hollywood hideaway is a favorite with rock’n’roll royalty such as U2. The on-site recording studio is a major draw, but so are the luxurious quarters and the Whiskey Bar.

  • Sunset Strip has been LA’s nocturnal playground since the 1920s and is the most history-laden section of the 25-mile (40-km) Sunset Boulevard. Stars, starlets, wannabes, and those that like to be around them are still drawn to landmarks old and new, including the Chateau Marmont, the Whisky a Go-Go, the Mondrian Hotel with its exclusive Sky Bar, and Johnny Depp’s music club, the Viper Room.

  • The heady mix of hip restaurants, nightclubs, and bars along the city’s entertainment mile attracts legions of the young and the trendy.

  • Cooking aficionados love browsing through this vast assortment of quality kitchen-ware, from pots and pans to hard-to-find utensils.

  • The archetypal California watersport is practiced all along the coast – Surfrider Beach (see Malibu Lagoon State/Surfrider Beach) in Malibu is one of the most famous, but Manhattan Beach and Palos Verdes (see Palos Verdes Peninsula) are equally popular.

  • Visit this Indian restaurant with decor inspired by the Hindu sun god for breads, tandoori, and curries.
