The myth, the velocity, the edginess in creative and technological fields – this is Los Angeles, where the multicultural future that awaits the rest of the country is already a firm reality. In little more than 200 years, LA has grown from a dusty Spanish outpost into one of the world’s largest and most complex cities offering top venues for everything from archaeology and the arts to food. The birthplace of Mickey Mouse and Hollywood, LA has shaped the imaginations of millions.

The wealth of a city is often reflected in its public buildings, so it should come as no surprise that Beverly Hills has the kind of civic center that’s the envy of other towns. Its centerpiece is the elegant City Hall, built in 1932 in Spanish Renaissance style and harmoniously incorporated into a contemporary Spanish-style complex with palm-lined walkways and curved colonnades. It houses a beautiful library as well as the local police and fire departments.
-
It’s no longer the trendiest of LA’s luxury hotels, but its exalted place in Hollywood history remains. Drinks in the Polo Lounge, tanning by the poolside, and opulent comforts are all part of the unforgettable experience.

LA’s most famous hotel has been part of Hollywood history since its 1912 opening. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. and Will Rogers got drunk in the bar, Howard Hughes rented Bungalow 3 for 30 years, and Marilyn Monroe reportedly romanced both JFK and RFK here. Political leaders, royals, and Hollywood headliners have all stayed, partied, and cavorted at the legendary Pink Palace. It’s been featured in movies and on the cover of the Eagles’ Hotel California album. And stars still come – Elton John celebrated his 55th birthday here in 2002.
-
A B&B that doesn’t offer much in terms of amenities or style, but you can truthfully brag that you have stayed in Beverly Hills. Converted from an apartment building, it’s a short walk away from the goodies of Rodeo Drive.

This 1950s-style motel with a small pool is within walking distance of the Farmers Market, Melrose Avenue, and the Beverly Center. Framed art and cheerful bedspreads adorn the rooms. The downstairs diner, Swingers, is popular (see Swingers).
-
The paved beach path is equally popular for slow bike cruises. Mountain bikers have plenty of trails to explore in the Santa Monica Mountains.

This memorial by Betye Saar and Sheila de Bretteville commemorates the story of former slave, Biddy Mason (1818–91), a leader who established the city’s first black church.

Big Bear lake and mountain resort is an absolutely fantastic way to spend a day or two. About 2 hours out of downtown LA and only needing to change roads twice its very easy to get to. In winter Big Bear is one of the worlds premier ski resorts offering two mountains on one lift pass. In summer you can hire a boat and spend the day on the lake. Either way Big Bear is perfect if you want a relaxing day break from the hustle of LA itself. When i went, we got up early, headed up to the moutains (Worth noting, if you leave before sunrise or come back at sunset you can get stunning views of the sunrise/set over the whole of Los Angeles) i spent a day snowboarding in fresh snow, then i headed back and had dinner on venice beach, very surreal day!
