  • 1. Samarkanda

    Samarkanda overlooks Atocha’s famous tropical garden (see Estación de Atocha). An international menu is served, complemented by Rioja wines.

  • 2. Café del Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza

    This pleasant café (see Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza) has an à la carte menu and a good selection of snacks and light meals.

  • 3. Horcher

    One of Madrid’s most exclusive restaurants, Horcher specializes in the cooking of central Europe, in particular game.

  • 4. Balzac

    A classy restaurant near the Prado. The Mediterranean food is distinguished and there’s an excellent wine list. Book ahead.

  • 5. Café Chócala

    This small café, opposite the main gate of the Parque del Retiro (see Parque del Retiro), makes a good coffee stop.

  • 6. La Taberna la Dolores

    This classic taberna has kept its original tiled frontage, dating from 1908. The canapés (pulgas ) are recommended.

    The shop-café (see Chains) is always busy. Everything from ham and eggs to bowls of tacos. Breakfast served until midday.

    Situated off the Paseo del Prado, there’s a terrace where you can snack on Castilian dishes such as jamón Ibérico and goat’s cheese.

    Creative versions of traditional Spanish recipes and a superb wine list.

  • 10. Paradís

    Set in a former 19th-century palace, and popular with the Spanish glitterati; the cuisine is Catalan with the emphasis on fish and seafood.
