Known variously as the “Golden Isle”, the “Wooded Isle” and the “Tranquil Isle”, Mallorca is all of these, despite its decades-long dependence on mass tourism. The island is laden with history and sights, from its castles and enchanted gardens to caves and spectacular mountains. The eastern and southern coasts still sport some of the cleanest, most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, and the city of Palma is more attractive, culturally alive and fun than ever.
Mallorca (or Majorca) gets its name from the ancient Roman name for the island, Balearis Major, meaning the “biggest Balearic”-
Located on a farm on the outskirts of Bunyola, the shelters consist of four rustic houses that can accommodate small groups of up to seven. There are showers, a kitchen and small lounge.

Frogs, salamanders, geckos, snakes and lizards abound on the island. But perhaps the most interesting creatures are the endangered ferreret, a type of frog found only in the ravines of the Serra de Tramuntana, and the Lilford’s lizard. Hunted to extinction by their natural enemies on the main island, the latter still thrive on the smaller islets offshore, especially Cabrera. Another endangered species is the caretta turtle, which lives in the waters around Sa Dragonera and Cabrera.

Delicious Italian dishes, such as ravioli with porcini mushrooms and panna cotta. The seafood dishes with champagne sauce are a another treat. The ambience is elegant, and service multilingual.

One of Mallorca’s most unusual festivals, in honour of St Anthony, the patron saint of pets. For two days in January in Sa Pobla, pets are led through the town to be blessed outside the church. Elsewhere, dancers drive out costumed devils, to ensure harmony during the coming year, and everyone circles bonfires and eats spicy pastries filled with spinach and marsh eels.

The 20th-century English writer, scholar and poet put Mallorca on the international literary map (see Deià).

Succulent marinated salmon or the local fish baked in salt, with lemon tart for dessert, are specialities here. The views are fantastic, too.

In the third century BC, Carthage comes into conflict with the expanding Roman Empire. Rome is victorious in 146 BC and establishes order for the next 500 years. Roads and towns are built and, in AD 404, Mallorca and its neighbouring islands are established as the province of Balearica.
