  • Immaculate lawns set off beautiful flower gardens, a vibrant counterpoint to the rich ochre of the bungalows. The food is some of the island’s best.

  • Dating back to 903, this picturesque structure was originally built by the Moors. Service is very attentive, and the rooms are comfortable – all just minutes from the old town and port. The fee includes an abundant breakfast with homemade yogurt and jams.

  • Pleasant 18th-century country estate with charm and personalized service. The cooking is top-notch, and all of the elegant rooms are junior suites. There’s a patio, pool and terraces.

  • Unpretentious high-rise overlooking the port and central plaza, where live music is performed on summer evenings. The main rooms are handsome in a warm, clubby way, and the rooms are cosy.

  • Terrace after terrace descends to the sea, punctuated with beautiful gardens and pools along the way. Many activities are on offer, including aqua classes, water polo and tennis. All of the spacious rooms have sea views and balconies, and some of Mallorca’s finest beaches are nearby. There are also bars, fine restaurants and a beauty salon.

  • Dalí and Kandinsky prints set the tone for this well-located standard hotel. Many of the spacious rooms enjoy views of the canal, and all have sizeable balconies. The decor is an interesting mix of period and contemporary styles.

  • A wonderful fusion of modern luxury and traditional Mallorcan style, with wrought iron, antiques and oriental rugs. All rooms have magnificent views, and the facilities are that of a full resort.

  • The building is almost unique in Mallorca, being a gracious Italianate structure from the 1920s, with luxury suites or annex rooms. The restaurant is fabulous (see Restaurant Villa Italia, Port d’Andratx).

  • Its wonderful position above the rocks at the end of the port gives this unpretentious structure a charmingly picturesque quality. Wraparound terraces overlook the entire port, and all of the mid-sized rooms have balconies, most with views. The aesthetic incorporates glass-block design with etched-glass decorations on the lobby doors.

  • There are two official hostels in barracks-like buildings. You must book in advance, as they get full quickly.
