  • 1. Tryp Jaume III, Palma

Dalí and Kandinsky prints set the tone for this well-located standard hotel. Many of the spacious rooms enjoy views of the canal, and all have sizeable balconies. The decor is an interesting mix of period and contemporary styles.

  • 2. Coronado, Peguera Bay

With its perfect location at the end of the curving cove and its more or less exclusive beach, this hotel offers just about everything for a quiet holiday. Colour schemes reflect the setting: sky blue, pale green and gold, enhanced with graceful Indonesian motifs.

  • 3. Eden & Eden Park, Port de Sóller

Two properties on the same street near the beach. Both have large pools and garden terraces, but the Eden Park is a bit more lush. Rooms on the upper floors have views of the port and mountains. Very popular with families.

  • 4. Hotel Don Pedro, Cala Sant Vicenç

A practical stepped design gives every balcony maximum sun and unobstructed space at this modern hotel that dominates one of Mallorca’s best coves. Although busy, the beach is quite easygoing, and there’s a good hotel pool, too.

  • 5. Hotel Simar, Cala Sant Vicenç

A typical high-rise has been softened enough with foliage and trees so that it has a certain charm. Every room has an ample balcony, and there’s a good pool and decent restaurant, with half- or full-board available.

  • 6. Molins, Cala Sant Vicenç

Large, quasi-resort hotel just steps away from a broad beach with pure waters. The decor is lowkey and traditional; each room has its own balcony with views. Sometimes there’s live music and dancing in the evenings.

  • 7. Hotel Daina, Port de Pollença

The most striking feature of this starkly modern establishment is the pool deck extending over the bay. All rooms have views of either the sea or mountains. Lots of greenery creates an inviting atmosphere.

  • 8. THB Felip Hotel, Portocristo

Unpretentious high-rise overlooking the port and central plaza, where live music is performed on summer evenings. The main rooms are handsome in a warm, clubby way, and the rooms are cosy.

  • 9. Villa Sirena, Cala Figuera

Its wonderful position above the rocks at the end of the port gives this unpretentious structure a charmingly picturesque quality. Wraparound terraces overlook the entire port, and all of the mid-sized rooms have balconies, most with views. The aesthetic incorporates glass-block design with etched-glass decorations on the lobby doors.

  • 10. Marqués del Palmer, Colònia Sant Jordi

Set on its own crescent of sugary beach, with absolutely nothing else around. There’s also a large pool built out on a deck over the sea. The rooms are smallish, but most have sea views. Very popular with families, with lots of activities on offer for kids. Guests are mostly German.
