Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • Hāna Coast Gallery

Charming Patrick Robinson has run this gallery for years and is extremely knowledgeable about the excellent local artists represented. Paintings, prints, furniture, jewelry, etc.

  • Hāna Cultural Center

The Hāna Cultural Center and its museum has displays of artifacts from the district, including stone implements, kapa cloth, quilts, and an extensive shell collection. (see Hāna Cultural Center)

  • One of Maui’s few places to serve traditional Hawaiian foods like kālua pork, poi , and laulau .There’s a good mix of other ethnic dishes, like pasta and sashimi, too.

  • Hāna Kai-Maui Resort

“Basic” is the best word to describe the accommodations; “totally awesome” the way to sum up the site. The only condos in Hāna, they sit directly above the pounding surf.

  • Opposite the bank and post office in what passes for the hub of Hāna town, the Ranch offers hearty servings of wholesome food in a fittingly rustic setting.

  • Hāna’s other store focuses mostly on foodstuffs, including delicious roasted, ready-for-apicnic chickens.

  • This County Beach Park is actually the southernmost end of Kā’anapali Beach. Several canoe clubs call this beach home and host occasional paddling events.

  • Huge burgers, messy ribs, frou-frou drinks, and plenty of rock ’n’ roll memorabilia.

  • Immortalized in song, you really CAN get just about anything at Harry Hasegawa’s wonderful, old-fashioned general store. A must-stop, even if you don’t need anything.

  • A hat with a brim will protect your head from sunburn.
