Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • Hawaiian Island Humpback Whales National Marine Sanctuary

In its entirety, the sanctuary almost completely encompasses the ocean surrounding the Hawaiian islands. But its administrative center sits on the water’s edge at Kīhei, with a large viewing scope mounted on its deck for winter visitors to watch the humpback whales frolic offshore. In the adjoining Education Center, colorful displays depict the scientific and cultural significance of whales and other marine animals that share Hawai’i’s marine ecosystem.

  • Kālua pork, lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice, laualua , rice, poi , or any variation make up the modern Hawaiian plate.

  • If you want to stay at the cabins or campgrounds at either Wai’ānapanapa or Polipoli Springs state parks, you’ll need a permit from the government department for state parks. Wai’ānapanapa’s 12 cabins are an incredible deal if you don’t mind rustic accommodations – the scenery is heavenly. There’s only one cabin at Polipoli, so if you want to stay here, you may have to plan your whole trip around its availability.

  • Hawai’i Nature Center

A hands-on natural science center, filled with educational and entertaining indoor exhibits and outdoor experiences, all designed to increase understanding of Maui’s unique environment. This innovative center, which fascinates children and adults alike, features interactive games and displays about the islands’ plant and animal life, and teaches how to help protect the fragile ecosystems of Hawai’i.

  • Heart of Lāna’i Art Gallery

Hotel Lāna’i artist-in-residence Denise Hennig owns and operates this gallery. Stop by for one of her afternoon “Lāna’i-Kine” teas.

  • Two companies, Blue Hawaiian (871 8844) and Sunshine Helicopters (871 0722), offer airborne tours of the island.

  • Henry Clay’s Rotisserie

After years of working at some of Maui’s best restaurants, Henry Clay took the plunge and opened his own place. His Southern heritage reveals itself in such specialties as rotisserie chicken, Cajun shrimp, and pecan pie.

  • From easy walks to arduous hikes, Maui has miles and miles of hiking trails that will let you explore the island’s diverse terrain and climatic zones. With treks through mountains, valleys, volcanic craters, lava fields, coastal areas, rain forests, dry land forests, nature preserves, and botanical gardens, it’s no wonder that hiking is one of Maui’s most popular activities.

  • Hili are braided lei made from a single plant material such as ti leaf or maile .

  • Opened in 1963 and named for a popular Hawaiian entertainer who performed during the 1950s and 1960s, this is the largest retailer of island-style, locally made apparel, souvenirs, and gifts.
