Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • A creaking old general store, where the groceries and sundries share space with a deli counter, and the front room has high-end clothing, books, and gifts.

  • Ironwood Ranch Riding Stables (669 4991), Pony Express (667 2200), and Mendes Ranch (871 5222) provide equestrian pleasures in the hills and woods.

  • Horseback Riding

Not just an hour trudge around a meadow and back to the barn, the guided horseback riding options on Maui include ranchlands and coastlines, and a full day into Haleakalā crater.

  • You can watch artisans demonstrate the skill of glass blowing in this combined studio and shop. And then, of course, you can buy the wares – from paperweights to exquisite vases.

  • Hotel Hāna-Maui

No TVs, no radios, just one of the most beautiful and relaxing properties in Hawai’i. It’s been updated with modern amenities and a spa, yet still retains its old Hawaiian flavor.

  • The dining room at Hāna-Maui offers Pacific Island cuisine, featuring fresh fish and locally grown produce. It has a majestic view of Hāna Bay.

  • A lovely, refurbished 11-room hotel. Built in 1923, this historic building was originally a lodging for Dole Plantation executives. Today, it’s home to Henry Clay’s Rotisserie, an excellent choice of restaurant, regardless of where you stay.

  • The only central hotel on the island. It’s a local favorite because of its location, low rates, and fabulous Friday night entertainment. The accommodations are clean but extremely basic. The Oceanfront Dining Room – and it certainly is oceanfront! – serves delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

  • Ho’okipa

Waves come crashing in at heights of up to 15 ft onto Ho’okipa Beach, ensuring its renown as a playground for experienced surfers and windsurfers. But it is also a glorious spot for the less experienced to watch the skills of the dedicated boarders, especially during the international championship competitions held here. The best vantage for a view of the ocean is from high up at the overlook above the beach.

  • About 10 minutes past Pā’ia on Hāna Highway, this is a beach only for experienced surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. The beach’s east side is especially popular with surfers. Kite boarders also take advantage of the constant winds and wave conditions here.
