Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • Kukui Mall

The home of Kīhei’s only movie theaters. After a film, you can “grind” Tony Roma’s ribs or snack at an assortment of eateries.

  • A rapidly expanding chain of local fast food restaurants, popular with islanders for decades.

  • La Pérouse Bay

French explorer La Pérouse sailed into this bay in 1786, noting that the people “hastened alongside in their canoes, bringing as articles of commerce, hogs, potatoes, bananas, taro with cloth and some other curiosities.” Named after this first westerner to land on Maui’s shores, the bay is a great snorkeling and diving spot. (see La Pérouse Memorial and; Moments iin History).

  • Through the lush gardens and across the wooden bridge to the Lagoon Bar for a light lunch or, in the evening, a truly amazing event: the nightly Torch Lighting and Cliff Diving.

  • In a refurbished pineapple cannery, 50 stores selling everything from aloha wear to fine art. There’s a food court too, and a fun Mexican restaurant called Compadres.

  • Each of the 9 rooms and 3 parlor suites in this lovely and well-located inn are individually decorated in Victorian style. Modern conveniences mingle with the antiques. Continental breakfast included.

  • Lahaina Printsellers

A long-established Maui gallery with a respected penchant for reproductions of old Hawai’i maps.

  • Lahaina Scrimshaw

Since the use of whale bones and teeth was prohibited in 1973, 21st-century scrimshanders use fossilized bone or walrus tusk for their amazingly intricate creations.

  • All levels of archers can take aim at the bright red, yellow, and blue targets mounted on straw bales. Private and group lessons are also offered.

  • The enjoyment of hunting without harming a live animal is the appeal of sporting clays, especially with high-tech targets that actually mimic different animals and birds.
