Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • Standing on an awesome beachfront, the view, fresh fish, huge portions, and the kitschy Hawaiian decor have kept diners happy for years.

  • A Maui institution, Mama’s beach house specializes in island-style hospitality. Steps from the ocean in Ku’au, it’s no wonder that fresh fish is the main event here. Mama’s is known for its huge portions, home-baked bread, and megadesserts. (see Mama’s Fish House).

  • Mānele Bay Hotel

This big, typical resort hotel will get you as close as you can get to the beach on Lāna’i. The rooms are large and luxurious, with marble baths and balconies, though possibly in need of a little freshening up.

  • Marco’s Grill & Deli

A favorite for Italian sandwiches, pasta, veal, chicken, and fish dishes, plus calorie-packed desserts.

  • Maria Lanakila Church

Although the Catholic priests who arrived on Maui in 1846 were unpopular with the established Protestant leaders, Catholicism quickly became the island’s largest denomination as a result of the influx of Catholic laborers from Portugal and the Philippines. The church was built in 1856 and enlarged in 1858. The beautiful structure, which now stands at Waine’e and Dickenson streets, is a replica of the 1858 church.

  • Well known throughout the islands for stunning koa furniture, gifts that will easily fit into your suitcase are also available here.

  • Master’s Reading Room

A beautifully preserved coral and fieldstone building. Its exterior hasn’t changed a jot since its completion in 1834, when it was built for ships’ officers and their families as a respite from the “heat and unpleasant dust of the market.” It now houses the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.

  • This $30-million complex houses several theaters and an art gallery. Everyone from Tony Bennett to the Brothers Cazimero perform here; there’s something going on every day.

  • Across the street from several Kīhei beach parks, the rooms are clean and comfortable. There’s a restaurant on site, as well as a pool, two whirlpool spas, two tennis courts, and laundry facilities. And you’ll be within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants.

  • A funky place offering bagels, wraps, and the best coffee on Maui.
