Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • Carnival rides, livestock, flowers, produce, extraordinary orchid displays, and, of course, lots and lots of food – all of that and some of Hawai’i’s best entertainers can be found at this fair, held in central Maui every October. The fair draws almost 100,000 folks over four days.

  • Maui Crafts Guild

If you’re looking for artistic souvenirs or gifts, this collective of Maui artisans is the place for you. Almost every medium is represented.

  • Pearls of every size, shape, and color set in rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces are the specialties of Maui Divers.

  • Located in the middle of a pineapple plantation, the produce doesn’t get any fresher than this. And your purchases can be packed up ready for transport home.

  • Young women – and others lucky enough to be able to squeeze into “smallish” sizes – will especially enjoy shopping here for swimsuits – mostly fabulous bikinis – and casual clothing.

  • Bright red in color – don’t ask what’s in them – these are beloved on the island.

  • Set on 28 acres of coastal land, the Maui Lu offers Polynesian charm in its simple, comfortable accommodations. Guest rooms are air-conditioned and there are tennis courts and a Maui-shaped pool.

  • Kahului’s other shopping center, anchored by Longs Drug Store and Star Market. Cost Less Imports is fun, and Kahului Florist is a good place for lei (garlands).

  • Maui Marketplace

Sports Authority, Lowe’s Home Improvement Center, Old Navy, and Office Max have outlets here. The locally owned Hawai’i Liquor Superstore has an outstanding selection of wines.

  • Maui Marriott Resort & Ocean Club

Following a major renovation, which included the creation of a “super-pool,” the Marriott is an excellent choice for families. Set on world-famous Kā’anapali Beach, there are plenty of ocean activities steps away. Championship golf courses close by too.
