Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • Hawai’i’s last and one of its most beloved monarchs, her government was overthrown in 1893.

  • Quilting

    Among the many traditions brought by the missionaries was quilting. Not surprisingly, Hawaiian women took to the art form and made it their own, replacing New England designs with gorgeous renderings of local flora and fauna.

  • The former offers souvenirs and resort wear, and has a great little kiosk called Maui Espresso. The latter is home to 24-hour eatery Denny’s, postal services, and Whalers General Store, for everything from toiletries to souvenirs.

  • The trail meanders from Polipoli Springs State Park through stands of redwood trees. About 2 miles long, this moderately difficult trail begins at the 6,200-ft elevation and is a part of a network of three trails: Haleakalā Ridge, Plum Trail, and Redwood Trail.

  • Formerly the golf clubhouse at Kanapali, Reilley’s moved to Kahana and became a fine dining restaurant, with dishes such as filet mignon, rack of lamb, and lobster at affordable prices

  • The spectacular landscaping and oceanfront setting on an almost-private beach are the hallmarks here. Don’t miss the poolside Maui Onion restaurant for the best Maui Onion rings and smoothies.

  • Reyn’s

    Best known for the “insideout” aloha shirts sported by every businessman in the state, Reyn’s also makes great women’s wear.

  • A true old-fashioned general store, there’s a little bit of everything you might need here. In addition to groceries and sundries, you can stock up on fishing and camping gear, clothing, wine, and cold beer.

  • Known for its delicious deli foods and excellent wine selection, Rodeo also administers to regular grocery needs too. And yup, every now and again a cowboy rides up on horseback.

  • Located on an exclusive stretch of Kā’anapali Beach, this resort is set on sprawling tropical lawns and gardens. It has superb tennis facilities, including 11 paved courts and tournament seating. There is a nightly luau.
