Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • A wide variety of island arts and crafts, including Niiahu shell jewelry, perfumes, quilts, and dolls.

  • They came first by ship and then by airplane, and by the late 1950s tourists were coming in increasing numbers, seeking the warmth and exotic beauty of Hawai’i, a place within easy reach of the U.S. mainland’s West Coast. Today, the islands host more than seven million visitors each year, arriving from every corner of the globe.

  • As an oral tradition, Hawaiian stories and family histories were related through chant (oli) . Ranging greatly in style, oli are used for scores of reasons, from prayers and lamentations to requests for permission to gather flora.

  • Maps for trails are often available at park headquarters. Review them so you are sure of your route and how long it should take. Do not stray from marked trails as you may damage the landscape.

  • So as not to mar the pristine beauty of the island or damage its delicate ecosystems, take a plastic bag for your trash.

  • This long-established pleasure boating company offers a range of on-the-water experiences, including sailing on a catamaran or cruising in a high-powered raft. You can snorkel, scuba, and kayak all year round, and watch whales in winter.

  • Tropical Fruit

Mango, papaya, guava, liliko’i (passion fruit), bananas, and, of course, pineapple. Pure and simple right off the tree, blended into a delicious fruit smoothie, or transformed into an amazing dessert, these are truly paradisiacal flavors.

  • Not just for breakfast or dessert – pineapple, papaya, guava, liliko’i , and lychee turn up in salsas and sauces.

  • Night owls can dance ’til dawn on weekends at this stylish club with its capacious dance floor and state-of-the-art sound system.

  • Down at Hāna Bay, Tutu’s serves inexpensive local-style breakfasts and plate lunches. Maui’s own luscious Roselani macadamia nut ice cream somehow tastes better here than anywhere else.
