Maui

Maui is known as the “valley isle”, and most of its population nestles in the low-lying isthmus between the lush western mountains and the dustier slopes of Haleakalā to the east. Skirting the coast are some of the world’s finest beaches, from the popular resorts on the southwestern fringe to the wilder surfing beaches on the north and eastern shores. Maui’s administrative group also includes the islands of Moloka’i and Lana’i with more magnificent scenery and even greater remoteness.

  • The deli serves great cappuccino, delicious breakfasts, and light lunches. And the adjacent restaurant serves delectable pizzas from a wood-fired oven, creative Italian fare, and fresh fish nightly.

  • The brainchild of respected Hawaiian cultural specialist Clifford Nae’ole, Maui’s Ritz-Carlton Kapalua resort hotel (see The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua) is transformed during Easter weekend into a honeypot of cultural activities. Cultural presentations and craft demonstrations are held throughout the festival. The traditional lū’au presented in a very contemporary setting celebrates Hawaiian food, music, and dance.

  • Always a good idea in case of an emergency, although service may be limited or unavailable in some areas.

  • Charley’s

Gigantic, home-style breakfasts, pizza, and burgers, along with the possible company of Willie Nelson or Kris Kristofferson, both of whom have been known to drop in.

  • An Olowalu landmark, this once-classical and somewhat staid French restaurant has moved definitively into the 21st century under the accomplished tutelage of Chef/Owner Patrick Callerac. The dining room is intimate and lovely. (see Reilley’s Steaks & Seafood).

  • The sound of hundreds of thousands of firecrackers, the time-honored Lion Dance (see Lion Dance), and bountiful feasts of delicious and traditional foods mark Chinese New Year in the islands. The celebration takes place in early February, and you most certainly don’t have to be of Chinese heritage to take part.

  • Wide noodles are wokfried with bits of pork, green onion, and other vegetables and served in a paper cone.

  • Burgers, salads, sandwiches, and plate lunches, along with yummy baked goods made right on the premises.

  • A long-time Maui resident, Clementine magically crams a treasure trove of unique clothing, jewelry, accessories, and more into a joyous cupboard of a room!

  • Lovely and comfortable clothing, accessories, jewelry, bath items, housewares, and one of the best selections of greeting cards on the island.
