Opulent, lavish, deeply sumptuous – describ superlatives. The rooms are large and beautifully appointed, while dining choices include the sublime Kincha Japanese restaurant. But the jewel in the crown is the peerless Spa Grande.
-
Built in 1850 to attract a doctor to the area, this plantation-style home now welcomes guests to four nicely appointed rooms, all with private baths. Breakfast is served in the home’s dining room or may be enjoyed in the tropical Upcountry air, amid lush vegetation.
-
Listed on the State of Hawaii and National Historic Registrars, this charming and serene Craftsman-style house was built in 1924. It has been thoroughly restored and is comfortably furnished with period pieces.
-
A complex comprising a couple of dozen twobedroom, two-bath units. And while not by any means fancy, they’re right on the water fronting a wide, mile-long beach. Being on the fringe of Wailea, it’s quiet too.
-
No fee and no permit required to camp at Hosmer’s Grove or Kīpahulu. But permits are required at Hōlua and Palikū. They’re free and available at park headquarters on the day of your trip. Three cabins within the park are available only by lottery – apply at least two months in advance.
-
“Basic” is the best word to describe the accommodations; “totally awesome” the way to sum up the site. The only condos in Hāna, they sit directly above the pounding surf.
-
If you want to stay at the cabins or campgrounds at either Wai’ānapanapa or Polipoli Springs state parks, you’ll need a permit from the government department for state parks. Wai’ānapanapa’s 12 cabins are an incredible deal if you don’t mind rustic accommodations – the scenery is heavenly. There’s only one cabin at Polipoli, so if you want to stay here, you may have to plan your whole trip around its availability.
-
No TVs, no radios, just one of the most beautiful and relaxing properties in Hawai’i. It’s been updated with modern amenities and a spa, yet still retains its old Hawaiian flavor.
-
A lovely, refurbished 11-room hotel. Built in 1923, this historic building was originally a lodging for Dole Plantation executives. Today, it’s home to Henry Clay’s Rotisserie, an excellent choice of restaurant, regardless of where you stay.
-
The only central hotel on the island. It’s a local favorite because of its location, low rates, and fabulous Friday night entertainment. The accommodations are clean but extremely basic. The Oceanfront Dining Room – and it certainly is oceanfront! – serves delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
