  • Across the street from several Kīhei beach parks, the rooms are clean and comfortable. There’s a restaurant on site, as well as a pool, two whirlpool spas, two tennis courts, and laundry facilities. And you’ll be within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants.

  • Set on 28 acres of coastal land, the Maui Lu offers Polynesian charm in its simple, comfortable accommodations. Guest rooms are air-conditioned and there are tennis courts and a Maui-shaped pool.

  • Maui Marriott Resort & Ocean Club

Following a major renovation, which included the creation of a “super-pool,” the Marriott is an excellent choice for families. Set on world-famous Kā’anapali Beach, there are plenty of ocean activities steps away. Championship golf courses close by too.

  • On a white sand beach at the Mākena end of the Wailea resort area, these accommodations are elaborately decorated and all have ocean views.

  • A Garden of Eden-like atrium is at the heart of the stark white Maui Prince, the farthest afield of the south-side resorts. The beach here is fabulous: sun, shade, and perfect ocean conditions for the whole family. And the Sunday brunch is legendary.

  • The best place to stay on Moloka’i. The rooms and public spaces in the lodge combine the charm of old Hawai’i with modern luxury. You’ll find all the expected resort amenities – pool, gym, beautiful dining room, and a fabulous Great Room. If you prefer to be nearer the beach, your accommodation will be an individual deluxe canvas bungalow.

  • A well-landscaped, lowrise condominium complex. The units are individually owned (as is the case pretty much throughout the island). For the most part, the decor is fine, often tropical in flavor, and the units are very well equipped.

  • Nāpili Kai Beach Resort

A truly charming resort, its location on a world-class beach and bay unparalleled on the island. Rooms are comfortable and you’ll be treated like family. Staff here founded the Nāpili Kai Foundation to teach Hawaiian culture to Maui’s children, and the kids put on a wonderful hula show on Tuesdays.

  • If you’re likely to spend most of your time in and around Lahaina, consider this 10-acre complex right in the town. There’s nothing fancy about the rooms or grounds, but there’s a pool, barbecue and picnic areas, and it’s very good value.

  • Off Front St. and away from the crowds, hosts John and Sherry Barbier serve breakfast to their guests poolside in a courtyard surrounded by tropical landscaping. Several rooms have private baths.
