  • Near the top of Olinda above Makawao town, this is a special little romantic hideaway. The main house has two guest rooms and one “sweet;” there are also two cottages on site, complete with quilts and fireplaces – at the 4,000-ft level of Mt. Haleakalā, very welcome.

  • This condominium complex on Moloka’i ’s west side is an especially good choice for families. The variously sized units are individually owned but bookable through a “vacation rental pool.” The complex is nicely landscaped, and there’s a swimming pool too.

  • In the former plantation town of Hāli’imaile, the ocean and mountain views are sensational and the location ideal for traveling all over Maui. The cottage sleeps four, and there are six double rooms with shared baths in the main house.

  • Pioneer Inn

The whaling ships and their rowdy crews may be gone, but the Pioneer Inn remains, right on Lahaina Harbor. These days, the 45 guest rooms are all airconditioned (a must for hot Lahaina town) and all have balconies. The ground floor restaurant and bar are popular.

  • Plantation Inn

This charming 19-room inn combines plantation-era style with 21st-century convenience. Tucked away in its own bubble of serenity, the inn has a Jacuzzi and pool open 24 hours. Breakfast (included) is prepared by Gerard’s, a wonderful French restaurant that occupies the front of the building.

  • A series of low-rise apartments within walking distance of Lahaina but seemingly far from the hustle and bustle of town. There’s a children’s playground, a clubhouse for reading, relaxing, and table tennis, and a good beach. Minimum stay of five nights.

  • If you love falling asleep to the sound of the surf, this could be for you. Indeed, it’s the main attraction at this small condo, which has little else by way of recreational facilities. But the views are spectacular, and the price low.

  • The spectacular landscaping and oceanfront setting on an almost-private beach are the hallmarks here. Don’t miss the poolside Maui Onion restaurant for the best Maui Onion rings and smoothies.

  • Located on an exclusive stretch of Kā’anapali Beach, this resort is set on sprawling tropical lawns and gardens. It has superb tennis facilities, including 11 paved courts and tournament seating. There is a nightly luau.

  • Set on a lovely beach halfway between Lahaina and the Kapalua resort, two distinctive high-rise buildings offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Pool, Jacuzzi, tennis courts, barbecues, and a restaurant all on site.
