  • 1. Pioneer Inn

The whaling ships and their rowdy crews may be gone, but the Pioneer Inn remains, right on Lahaina Harbor. These days, the 45 guest rooms are all airconditioned (a must for hot Lahaina town) and all have balconies. The ground floor restaurant and bar are popular.

  • 2. Maui Lu Resort

Set on 28 acres of coastal land, the Maui Lu offers Polynesian charm in its simple, comfortable accommodations. Guest rooms are air-conditioned and there are tennis courts and a Maui-shaped pool.

  • 3. Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel

Dorm rooms, shared baths, communal kitchen, big garden, clean, comfortable, and safe, this is the place for the young, or youngish, backpacking and windsurfing set. Located in Central Maui, the hostel even offers free tours.

  • 4. Peace of Maui

In the former plantation town of Hāli’imaile, the ocean and mountain views are sensational and the location ideal for traveling all over Maui. The cottage sleeps four, and there are six double rooms with shared baths in the main house.

  • 5. Banyan Tree House

Set among fabulous old plantation homes lining Baldwin Avenue, this property offers three rooms in its main house and four cottages. There’s a formal dining room and living room as well as a wellequipped kitchen in the main house.

  • 6. Camp Ke’anae

One of Maui’s bestkept secrets. The location is absolutely fantastic: a cliff overlooking the Ke’anae Peninsula, where you can rent one of the attractive cabins or pitch a tent and use the community bath facilities.

  • 7. Hawai’i Division of State Parks

If you want to stay at the cabins or campgrounds at either Wai’ānapanapa or Polipoli Springs state parks, you’ll need a permit from the government department for state parks. Wai’ānapanapa’s 12 cabins are an incredible deal if you don’t mind rustic accommodations – the scenery is heavenly. There’s only one cabin at Polipoli, so if you want to stay here, you may have to plan your whole trip around its availability.

  • 8. Haleakalā National Park

No fee and no permit required to camp at Hosmer’s Grove or Kīpahulu. But permits are required at Hōlua and Palikū. They’re free and available at park headquarters on the day of your trip. Three cabins within the park are available only by lottery – apply at least two months in advance.

  • 9. Ho’okipa Haven Vacation Services

More than just accommodations, the folks at Ho’okipa can help with activities, car rentals, even real estate if you decide to stay. Their vacation rentals range from budget to luxury; check their website for last-minute deals.

  • 10. Affordable Accommodations Maui

Linda Little can find you a place to stay for as little as $55 a night. She’s got vacation rentals all over Maui and on some other islands too, and can also help with rental cars.
