  • 1. Puamana

A series of low-rise apartments within walking distance of Lahaina but seemingly far from the hustle and bustle of town. There’s a children’s playground, a clubhouse for reading, relaxing, and table tennis, and a good beach. Minimum stay of five nights.

  • 2. Ohana Maui Islander

If you’re likely to spend most of your time in and around Lahaina, consider this 10-acre complex right in the town. There’s nothing fancy about the rooms or grounds, but there’s a pool, barbecue and picnic areas, and it’s very good value.

  • 3. Embassy Vacation Resort

A big pink pyramidal allsuite hotel. Included with your suite is a complimentary poolside breakfast buffet and afternoon cocktail reception. For the more healthy minded, there’s a gym, a beauty salon, and a spa.

  • 4. Aston Kā’anapali Shores

This beachfront resort, part of the local Aston chain, offers the choice of hotel or condo-style accommodations. There are laundry facilities, a sundry store, an activities desk, restaurant, and a children’s program too.

  • 5. Kahana Sunset

A no-frills place, the secluded beach and laidback style being the main assets. Closer to Nāpili than to Kahana, some of the varied accommodation are close to the water. There’s a garden with barbecue, a pool, and plenty of serenity.

  • 6. Nāpili Kai Beach Resort

A truly charming resort, its location on a world-class beach and bay unparalleled on the island. Rooms are comfortable and you’ll be treated like family. Staff here founded the Nāpili Kai Foundation to teach Hawaiian culture to Maui’s children, and the kids put on a wonderful hula show on Tuesdays.

  • 7. Punahoa Condominiums

If you love falling asleep to the sound of the surf, this could be for you. Indeed, it’s the main attraction at this small condo, which has little else by way of recreational facilities. But the views are spectacular, and the price low.

  • 8. Maui Coast Hotel

Across the street from several Kīhei beach parks, the rooms are clean and comfortable. There’s a restaurant on site, as well as a pool, two whirlpool spas, two tennis courts, and laundry facilities. And you’ll be within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants.

  • 9. Hale Hui Kai

A complex comprising a couple of dozen twobedroom, two-bath units. And while not by any means fancy, they’re right on the water fronting a wide, mile-long beach. Being on the fringe of Wailea, it’s quiet too.

  • 10. Hāna Kai-Maui Resort

“Basic” is the best word to describe the accommodations; “totally awesome” the way to sum up the site. The only condos in Hāna, they sit directly above the pounding surf.
