  • 1. Chez Paul

An Olowalu landmark, this once-classical and somewhat staid French restaurant has moved definitively into the 21st century under the accomplished tutelage of Chef/Owner Patrick Callerac. The dining room is intimate and lovely. (see Reilley’s Steaks & Seafood).

  • 2. Pacific’O & I’O

Sister restaurants steps apart, both feature the extraordinarily creative cuisine of chef James McDonald with the focus on fresh fish. Both offer indoor and outdoor dining; the patios are literally on the beach, providing a picture postcard ambience. (see Pacific’O & I’o).

  • 3. Roy’s Kahana Bar & Grill

Hawai’i’s undisputed father of East-meets-West cuisine, Roy Yamaguchi operates more than 30 restaurants throughout the islands and the mainland U.S. Always bustling, with a hip and lively atmosphere. (see Roy’s Kahana Bar & Grill).

  • 4. Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar

New Wave Sushi and innovative, Japanese-inspired Pacific Rim cuisine make Sansei one of the most popular restaurants in the state. The restaurant has two locations on Maui, both with laser karaoke – three times a week in Kīhea, twice a week in Kapalua. (see Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar).

  • 5. Plantation House Restaurant at Kapalua

The chef here, Alex Stanislaw, combines the smoky, earthy flavors of his Mediterranean heritage with local Hawaiian ingredients to create a cuisine all his own. Set above the Kapalua resort, the Plantation House Restaurant offers spectacular views. (see Plantation House Restaurant at Kapalua).

  • 6. A Saigon Café

Operating one of the most popular ethnic restaurants on Maui, owner Jennifer Nguyen claims to be too busy to put up a sign! Though this makes the place rather difficult to locate, the food is great and inexpensive (see A Saigon Café).

  • 7. Mala, An Ocean Tavern

On the oceanfront, chef/owner Mark Ellman’s newest eatery features organic ingredients where possible, small plates and reasonable prices. The signature dessert, Carmel Miranda, is a favorite (see Mala, An Ocean Tavern).

  • 8. Spago

America’s best-known celebrity chef has landed on Maui. Wolfgang Puck’s signature restaurant, Spago, is located in the beautiful Four Seasons Resort. Puck’s now-classic California cuisine receives an island twist in a stunning setting. (see Spago).

  • 9. Mama’s Fish House

A Maui institution, Mama’s beach house specializes in island-style hospitality. Steps from the ocean in Ku’au, it’s no wonder that fresh fish is the main event here. Mama’s is known for its huge portions, home-baked bread, and megadesserts. (see Mama’s Fish House).

  • 10. Hāli’imaile General Store

Upcountry Maui’s best restaurant is housed in a marvelously refurbished 1925 plantation store. Chef/Owner Beverly Gannon’s signature creations like Hunan Lamb, Szechuan Salmon, and Ahi Napoleon have garnered national acclaim. Save room for dessert. (see Hāli’imaile General Store).
