  • Are these details incorrect?
  • 1. Water

Be sure to carry plenty of drinking water as freshwater streams and pools usually contain parasites.

  • 2. Sturdy Shoes

Lava is brittle and sharp and will tear your soles, so strong shoes with good traction are recommended.

  • 3. Warm Clothes and Rain Gear

The weather can change quickly, so be prepared for wet and/or cold conditions.

  • 4. Hat

A hat with a brim will protect your head from sunburn.

  • 5. Sunscreen

The tropical sun is strong, so the frequent application of sunscreen is essential.

  • 6. Insect Repellent

Mosquitoes and other biting critters have found their way here, so insect repellent is a good idea, especially in shady, damp areas.

  • 7. Snacks

Food is not always available near trails, so take some fruit and sweet snacks.

  • 8. Trash Bag

So as not to mar the pristine beauty of the island or damage its delicate ecosystems, take a plastic bag for your trash.

  • 9. Trail Map

Maps for trails are often available at park headquarters. Review them so you are sure of your route and how long it should take. Do not stray from marked trails as you may damage the landscape.

  • 10. Cell Phone

Always a good idea in case of an emergency, although service may be limited or unavailable in some areas.
