  • Midnight masses are followed by festivities on Christmas.

  • Festivities commemorate the valiant defense of Tenochtitlán by the Aztecs, led by Cuauhtémoc, against the Spaniards. Brilliantly costumed concheros perform ritual pre-Hispanic dances on August 13 at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas .

  • Mother’s Day in Mexico is on May 10 and is a joyful occasion. The restaurants are filled with family celebrations. Mothers receive bouquets of roses as presents and are serenaded by mariachis .

  • Celebrates Colombus’ discovery of the New World.

  • The Day of the Dead in Mexico is a two day celebration to honor deceased relatives and ancestors. Families invite the dead to visit by creating elaborate altars decorated with candy skulls, flowers, and the favorite foods of the departed. It is believed that deceased children return on November 1st. The next day the dead adult relatives and ancestors visit.

  • Three Kings’ Day, or Epiphany on January 6, is the traditional gift giving day, when families gather to celebrate. In the days leading up to it, children have their photos taken with the Three Kings, send their gift wish list aloft through balloons, and help select the sweet cakes, rosca de reyes, which are served on this day.

  • Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

    Throughout December pilgrims from across the Americas arrive at Villa de Guadalupe to honor their patron saint and Mexico’s beloved Our Lady of Guadalupe. Thousands time their arrival for December 12, the Feast Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, to attend the mass and thank the Virgin. Pilgrims often complete their journey to the Villa de Guadalupe on their knees.

  • Holy Thursday (March/April) is a traditional day of worship at churches. Passion Plays are held on Good Friday.
