Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • Cathode Ray, Fort Lauderdale

This is the place to be in downtown Fort Lauderdale, especially when all the whitecollar guys show up after work to relax and unwind during happy hour (2–8pm). There’s a comedy night on Mondays, and the weekend high-energy partying culminates with big-screen viewing of Queer as Folk .

  • A light and lacy setting in a period cottage. Order hot crabmeat au gratin, a large tuna-nut salad, or a shrimp platter. Open for lunch only.

  • A seafood marinade using lime juice, onions, green bell peppers, and cilantro (coriander).

  • James Deering’s half-brother built this winter residence for himself on Biscayne Bay. The original 19th-century house, Richmond Cottage, was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, but it’s been rebuilt and the entire estate refurbished since then, including the extraordinary Mediterranean-Revival mansion.

  • Charles Deering Estate

Right on Biscayne Bay, the estate contains two significant architectural works: Richmond Cottage, built in 1896 as the area’s first inn, and a large Mediterranean-Revival “Stone House,” built in 1922. You can also visit what is thought to be a Pre-Columbian burial site and a fascinating fossil pit.

  • An amazing tropical island world unto itself, with a wonderful beach, various pools, golf, tennis, nature walks, hot-tubbing, sport fishing, snorkeling, windsurfing, etc.

  • International fusion artistry at its finest. The Indian-influenced dishes include “cowboy” steak with tamarind and chili and lobster-crab cakes with fruit chutney. Hazelnut “Kit-Kat” bars make an unusual finish.

  • You can see where the ageless diva and Sonny lived on the water in Fort Lauderdale and South Beach.

  • Controversial Seminole chief who brought wealth to his tribe in the 1980s, by building casinos on reservations.

  • A sauce with olive oil, garlic, lemon juice or wine vinegar, and parsley. Jalapeño peppers are optional.
