Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • A fusion cuisine pioneer. Portions are not pretentiously miniscule; tastes are light and cleverly composed. Try the sakemarinated chicken.

  • Still packing them in after 20 years, this local favorite has been made a landmark by politicians, CEOs, and celebrities. Aged steak, fresh seafood, and award-winning caesar salad.

  • Clay Hotel and Youth Hostel, SoBe

This enchanting Spanishstyle place, built in 1925 and beautifully refurbished, also happens to be the biggest bargain in the Western World and is always teeming with international youth. Book very far in advance to get a place.

  • Clevelander

This hotel’s daytime beachfront cafés evolve into one of SoBe’s top pool-bar scenes after dark. Its proximity to the beach inspires a more casual style than the usual nightspots, and there’s always a crowd to enjoy happy hour and live music.

  • Facing the beach and on the sidewalk, there’s always something going on here: listening to the live music, having something to eat, or just checking out the passersby.

  • Evokes a pre-Civil War atmosphere with its décor.

  • See Latin shows every night but Monday at this club in the Fontainebleau Hilton.

  • Always lively, usually with young, perky people, this is downtown Coconut Grove. As well as shops, outdoor eateries, and cafés, live bands often play in CocoWalk (see Coral Gables and Coconut Grove).

  • Perhaps Greater Miami’s best such festival, attracting throngs of visitors who come to eat, drink, listen to concerts in Peacock Park, and browse among 300 arts and crafts booths.

  • The Grove (see Coral Gables and Coconut Grove) comes fully alive with one of the biggest arts festivals in the country, complete with competitions, allday concerts, tasty street food, and throngs of avid arts lovers.
