Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • In a reversal of the usual story, this period Mediterranean-Revival building, in the Spanish Rococo style, was built in 1926 as a movie house and later converted to a theater.

  • In 1956, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot premiered at this restored 1920s venue. Nothing so history-making has since occured, but the likes of Kathleen Turner and Jimmy Buffett perform.

  • This is a place to walk (see CocoWalk), but it’s probably best not to venture more than a few blocks west of CocoWalk (“Black Grove,” sadly, is uninviting).

  • CocoWalk

A compact shopping and entertainment center right in the heart of Coco Village – always something or someone to catch the eye.

  • CocoWalk

A host of select shops, restaurants, outdoor cafés, and a cineplex provides the entertainment. But, here in the heart of the Grove, it’s great just to hang out and listen to the live band playing most of the time on the balcony above.

  • CocoWalk

This compact, two-story center is the heart of Coconut Grove Village, and features some good shopping, dining, and entertainment. The atmosphere is, in fact, that of a village. People are hanging out, zipping by on in-line skates and bikes, checking each other out. Often live music is happening right in the middle of it all. The main attraction in the evening is probably the multiplex cinema.

  • This gay night spot is very popular and full of beautiful creatures dancing to some of the top DJs in the city. Located near Fort Lauderdale’s Hollywood airport, but worth the trip out there.

  • A newer incarnation of a former straight venue, this place is fresh and youthful, featuring lavish drag acts and an abundance of beautiful young musclemen. Every night some of the area’s better-known DJs launch global groove house music “dance-a-thongs”.

  • Collins and 7th Street, SoBe

For your upscale shopping convenience, all the SoBe boutiques that seriously matter are clustered around intersection.

  • Collins Avenue at 7th Street, South Beach

The block or two around this intersection has all the designer boutiques you’ll ever need, from Versace Jeans Couture to Club Monaco, with its carefully selected knockoffs. Also check out the side-street stores.
