Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • Key Biscayne is blessed with some of Miami’s top beaches. Certainly the most impressive is this one, which is actually rated among the top ten in the country. Located on the upper half of the key, it’s 3 miles (5 km) long and enormously wide, with palm trees and picnic areas. The waters are calm and shallow, and good for snorkeling. There are also concession stands, 75 barbecue grills, a winding boardwalk, and convenient parking. Very popular for parties.

  • Walk the nature trails to Florida Bay and check out the Museum of Natural History of the Florida Keys and the Adderly Town Historic Site.

  • crobar

Housed in the former Cameo movie theater, this place employs high-tech prestidigitations to give you the sense of floating in a Surrealist’s dreamworld.

  • crobar

Housed in an architectural gem, the former Cameo Theater, this is high-tech fun at its most cutting-edge. crobar is glitzy and full of attitude, and you should definitely wear your Prada bowling shoes, or whatever’s the latest thing to turn the fashion cognoscenti’s heads.

  • Tennessee Williams is said to have written A Streetcar Named Desire here; presidents and royalty have stayed, too.

  • Since Key West is closer to Cuba than to the Florida mainland, it makes sense to find a Cuban crafts shop here, despite the official embargo. Items include handmade boxes, dolls, and paintings.

  • In June, Key West remembers its rich Cuban heritage and celebrates with ethnic foods, terrific music, and dancing in the streets of the island.

  • Hispanic and Caribbean artists are shown here, as well as exhibitions relating to aspects of Cuban culture (see Top 10 Cuban Cultural Imports).

  • The Performance Series presents music, dance, film, and visual arts, with an emphasis on contemporary works and solo theater performers.

  • This Miami hotspot is where nude men dance for men. There are 25 male performers. The show starts at 7pm and it is nonstop action until closing time at 5am.
