Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • The decor may look tre' chic, but the staff is warm and friendly and, more importantly, the food is delish! The sushi may be a little pricey, but the ambiance is dazzling. For a special deal go Friday early evening for sushi happy-hour. All-you-can-eat sushi, spring rolls, edamame, watermellon and other suprises that change weekly, plus two drinks all for $10!

  • Internationally famous for its championship golf course. In fact, there are seven golf courses, along with 15 tennis courts, water park, health club, and a famous world-class spa.

  • Notable for its S-curved neck, distinctive beak, and spectacular diving skills, this is one of the most fascinating of Keys birds.

  • The perfect place for families, or for those who want to have the choice – to party or not to party. Very close to excellent Smathers Beach.

  • Take a plane or ferry to this totally undeveloped collection of islands, where the snorkeling is unbeatable (see Dry Tortugas National Park & Dry Tortugas from Key West).

  • You can travel to the wonderful islands of the Dry Tortugas by seaplane or ferry from Key West. Companies offering trips include the Yankee Freedom and the Fast Cat. The day-long tours include food and snorkeling gear. Camping overnight is also possible. The most visited island is Garden Key, the site of Fort Jefferson (see Dry Tortugas National Park).

  • Located almost 70 miles (110 km) west of Key West, these seven islands and their surrounding waters comprise a fantastic park. The snorkeling sights are exceptional, due to the shallow waters and abundance of marine life. You can snorkel directly off the beaches of Fort Jefferson or take one of the trips to the wreck of the Windjammer , which sank on Loggerhead Reef in 1907. Tropical fish, lobster, and even goliath grouper can be found (see Dry Tortugas from Key West).

  • Owned by actress Kelly McGillis, this restaurant-snack bar is easy-going and pleasant, serving mostly sandwiches, salads, and great breakfasts.

  • These gracious Victorian twins and their white picket fence will win your heart. The rooms are accented with lots of wicker and florals, and everyone seems extraordinarily friendly. The location is unsurpassed for convenience.

  • Besides the tacky T-shirt shops, Key West’s main drag (see Duval Street) is also home to some superb emporiums of quality merchandise, including: clothing at Fast Buck Freddie’s (No. 500); Sunlion Jewelry (No. 513); Island Furniture and Accessories (No. 1024); Gingerbread Square Gallery, mixing local artists and world-class glass blowers (No. 1207); and Archeo Ancient Art, which specializes in African art and Persian rugs (No. 1208).
