Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • The museum specializes in Latin American and 20thcentury American art and presents six to eight major exhibitions each year. The Martin Z. Margulies Sculpture Park displays 69 works in a variety of media distributed throughout the 26.5 acres of the FIU campus – a wonderfully rich and important representation of modern work. It is recognized nationally as one of the world’s great collections of sculpture and the largest on a university campus. It includes major pieces by Dubuffet, Miro, Nevelson, Calder, Noguchi, and Serra.

  • Looe Key Reef is one of the Keys’ most spectacular coral reefs and is great for snorkeling and diving. Call for information about boat trips to the best spots.

  • A safe haven for recovering Keys birds of all types. Healed ones are set free, if they like.

  • A hostel with a friendly, relaxing atmosphere. There are four beds per room and all apartment units have two bedrooms. Some private rooms are available. If you prefer a seaside location, ask about their beach hostel.

  • One of the great Miami Beach hotels, built in the ’50s. The restoration is now complete, and the effect is stunning. Rooms are large, and there’s a huge beachside spa.

  • Miami’s contender in the National Football League is the Miami Dolphins.

  • Fort Lauderdale Gay Beaches

There are two major beaches “Where the Boys Are” in the Fort Lauderdale area: the stretch where Sebastian Street meets A1A; and John U. Lloyd State Park Beach. You’ll know you’ve reached them when you sight guys with pumped muscles and skimpy swimsuits.

  • Fort Lauderdale Waters

Fort Lauderdale has been awarded the Blue Wave Beaches certification for spotless sands and crystal waters, which add up to superior underwater viewing. Many of the most interesting parts of the three-tiered natural reef system here are close to the shore, though most require a short boat ride. In addition, more than 80 artificial reefs have been built to enhance the growth of marine flora and fauna. Ocean Promotion is one of the companies organizing snorkeling and scuba trips.

  • Though the town is historically famous as the base of operations for the 19th-century inventor Thomas Alva Edison, modern Fort Myers has become one of the main escapes for Midwesterners seeking a holiday by the sea, especially in winter. Its beaches have the feel of Indiana or Iowa about them, full of families without any of the Miami obsessions with style. The only problems you’re likely to encounter are traffic snarls.

  • Possibly the finest service you’ll ever experience, from fresh fruit and orchids in your extremely large room with sea view, to a towncar shuttle to and from downtown Palm Beach, and one of the finest restaurants in South Florida.
