Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • Agustín Gaínza Gallery

The gallery’s namesake, a celebrated Cuban artist, shows his works here, as well as those of other contemporary Cuban and Latin American artists.

  • This excellent museum features Seminole artifacts, such as pottery and beautiful clothing. The Green Corn Ceremony is explained also, including the games, music, dance, and costumes involved. Outside, a nature trail leads through the cypress canopy, where signs explain the use of certain flora in Seminole culture (see Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki and Billie Swamp).

  • Exhibits on camp life, ceremonies, and the Seminole economy (see Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki and Billie Swamp).

  • Squares of black granite are engraved with the names of about a thousand Conchs who have been taken by the disease, along with some poignant, inspirational poetry.

  • Excellent value, considering the extreme chic that exudes from the cutting-edge restoration of this great Deco original. Check out the pool’s peek-a-boo portholes.

  • A typical Cuban pastry composed of chocolate, custard, and coconut.

  • Resembling a plump lighthouse, this colorful tower (built 1924) was the work of Denman Fink, George Merrick’s uncle. Neglected for decades, it was fully restored in 1993 and, although no longer used, the tower’s elegant Moorish touches make it an intriguing piece of industrial architecture.

  • Alice’s at La-Te-Da, Key West

Alice Weingarten creates culinary magic, with her signature fusion cuisine, all set in a romantic garden atmosphere.

  • Work by artists Pablo Soria, William Cordova, and Barbara Strasen.

  • A fun and wholesome day out. There’s a petting zoo with lots of baby animals and pony rides on weekends. There are also islands to search out, beaches to explore, playgrounds, and fish-filled lakes. Blacksmiths demonstrate their skills, as do other craftsmen, and the whole is delightfully uncrowded, as the park is well away from the tourist track.
