Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • Homemade soups; inventive salads, such as tomato with fennel and goat cheese; snapper française; steak au poivre; and an unforgettable fruit tart.

  • Winding along the western shore, this is the heart of Key Biscayne’s upscale residential district. The lucky ones with houses on the outer side of the road have magnificent views of Downtown Miami from their back gardens. Although the area has its share of mansions, most of the houses are more modestly proportioned. Still, it’s a rarefied neighborhood where flocks of ibis can be found picking away on someone’s lawn.

  • Haulover Park contains one of south Florida’s most beautiful beaches – a mile and a half of golden sand drawing people from all walks of life. Nestled between the Intercoastal Waterway and the Atlantic, the beach is ideal for surfing and swimming and on warm weekends it is jam-packed with sun bathers. The park itself has a marina, restaurant, tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, and a kite shop.

  • Haulover Park Beach

Haulover has been spared the sight of high-rise development. The dune-backed beach lies along the eastern side of the park, and to the north it has become the only nude beach in the county, part of it gay.

  • Keep walking north, past the straight nude beach, and you’ll soon reach the gay section – where no heavy action is tolerated.

  • If you are interested in Cuban memorabilia, this store is bound to have it. Items on sale include reproductions of Cuban artwork, telephone books and, of course, cigars.

  • Exclusive Keys resort offering dolphin encounters, fishing, an offshore sailing school, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, kayaking, waterskiing, glass-bottom boat tours, and so on.

  • Since it’s held in the middle of the low season, the third week of July (Hemingway’s birthday was July 21st), this party is mainly for the “Conchs.” Consequently, it seems to be the celebration most loved by the locals. Hemingway lookalikes help lead the celebrations and tributes to the island’s most famous writer.

  • The legal mastermind (1830–1913) who opened up Florida through railroads and luxury construction.

  • Herons

These elegant birds include the great blue heron (white phase, too), the little blue heron, the tri-colored heron, the greenbacked heron, and the blackcrowned night heron.
