Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • The Lincoln is home to the New World Symphony, which is made up of music college graduates. The young virtuosos perform an incredible mix of gospel, Piazzolla tango, symphonies, and chamber works.

  • Besides effective recreations of habitats in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, the Kalihari, and the Serengeti, the extensive park also features evocations of an Indian forest and the Great Plains of North America. Drive or take a guided bus tour through over 500 acres (200 ha) of wildlife.

  • Come to check out a quirky botánica or two.

  • Little Haiti is not so much dangerous as disconcerting – to see so much poverty just steps away from such wealth. The one attempt at promoting tourism was the Caribbean Marketplace. Though critically acclaimed, it has had mixed success.

  • A little slice of Cuba (see Calle Ocho, Little Havana).

  • A series of seven quirky murals.

  • Nicaraguan shops abound in the zone (also called Sweetwater) west of Calle Ocho.

  • Specializing in computeraided and video work by local artists.

  • SoBe’s biggest Deco tower, newly built, is located on a sandy beach in the heart of it all. The multifaceted property incorporates an old hotel – the rebuilt St. Moritz – six restaurants and an outlandishly beautiful, mosaic-tile, oceanfront swimming pool.

  • Features include a boardwalk through a mangrove swamp next to a lagoon where you can see water birds. Snorkeling is good in the shallow waters off the beach.
