Miami

At its best, Miami is all pastel hues and warm, velvety zephyrs – a tropical reverie. The culture is sensuous and physical, often spiked with Caribbean rhythms and accents. Outdoor activities hold sway throughout the area, at the world-famous beaches and in the turquoise waters; the vibrant nightlife, too, attracts pleasure-seekers, while significant historical sights are around every corner.

  • Maddie’s World

Crystals, jewelry, and gifts, including natural cosmetics and fragrances, and lush silk paintings.

  • She had a palatial spread next to Vizcaya for a while, and still owns a piece of the Delano Hotel restaurant.

  • One version of the Polynesian perennial features crème de noyaux, banana, grenadine, and tropical juices.

  • Mallory Square, Key West

Especially at sunset, this huge square at the Gulf end of Duval Street is a gathering place for all sorts of locals and visitors. Street performers keep it lively, and there are plenty of vendors of food and souvenirs (see Mallory Square).

  • Although you will most likely be there with a hoard of other sunset-viewers, the beauty of this moment and the general air of merriment will provide you with a memorable experience. Watch a tall ship sail in front of the huge setting sun, blazing orangy-pink at the Gulf’s edge. True romantics should keep an eye out for the beguiling green flash that’s said to occur just before the sun disappears below the horizon – if you catch it, it means good luck in love (see Mallory Square).

  • Located on Brickell Key (Claughton Island), near the Port of Miami and Downtown. The curved building means most rooms have a water view. Check the website for special rates and packages.

  • Mangia Mangia Pasta Café

Open for lunch and dinner, this centrally located Italian eatery has superb fresh pasta. As a result, it’s always busy and a firm local favorite. Tasty sauces, and great lasagne.

  • A meal here is not to be missed, not only for the exciting food – such as their signature wild mushroom and truffle “martini” – but also because the place is so central to Key West life.

  • A restaurant, bar, and sidewalk café, located on a busy corner (see Mangoes).

  • One of the hottest action venues on South Beach – live music and dancing, Floribbean dishes, and free-flowing cocktails (see King Mango Strut).
